Next in the Emotional Equations series, I want to explore the equation: Joy = Love – Fear!
My husband and I have a tandem – she was named by her French makers as the ‘Supersonic Divorce Machine!’ Why? It takes extraordinary partnership and us both practising skills we aren’t very good at to experience the ‘Joy’ of our one hour of exercise in these lockdown times!
Joy is achieved when my husband on the front proactively and clearly communicates the bumps, signals and safety information with enough time for me to action. Fear is what ensues if his communication waivers and bang, we hit a pothole! I think you get the picture or the puncture! If we pull apart or don’t communicate well, madness ensues!
Whilst he is tasked with communication, my part in this joyful relationship is balance and traffic management from the back! For those of you who know me well, beads of sweat are surely forming as you consider me at around 8 stone providing ballast and getting my traffic signalling perfect every time so we stay safe!
It’s exhausting to ensure we don’t pull apart (see graphic) or crash. Love must outweigh the constant sense of fear so that we experience joy on our cycles!
