The Worst Interview – The 70s Were a Different Time…

Reflecting on my career journey, I’ve had some colourful experiences, but one interview still stands out as the most unforgettable, and not in the best way. It was the late 70s, and I was applying to university, excited to start my studies. Sitting across from a recruiting professor, I expected the usual questions—my strengths, career ambitions, and so on. Instead, he looked me in the eye and said, “Do something that would shock me.”

Honestly, I was gobsmacked. It was clear then that this was not a place I wanted to invest my time or talent, so I simply stood up and left. Looking back, this experience was a valuable reminder that an interview is not just about the interviewer assessing us; it's equally an opportunity to ensure our values align with the organisations we join.

Have any of you ever walked out of an interview? It’s more empowering than you’d think!
