The Starfish Thrower

In stepping up to help at this time, I was very proud to be accepted as a volunteer to support the Oxfordshire NHS, and have some very interesting learnings to share!

1. It’s good for all of us to do things we aren’t the best at! Driving, navigation and logistics are not my strengths. Yet they are skills necessary to deliver care packages to hospitals, surgeries, health & safety centres and NHS offices. When learning a new skill or practising an old one, give it a go. Determination is key!

2. Followship is very important! We all need a leader to keep us accountable and on task. Any plan needs a clear objective, output measures plus defined roles and responsibilities powerfully communicated. It’s been valuable for me to listen and take direction as a volunteer rather than give it!

3. Brilliant people make the difference in any situation! The scale of what the front line critical workers are doing is truly humbling. Having led businesses globally, we need brilliant people to succeed. It’s so evident that the NHS and key workers are bringing their whole human strength to support society right now!

Like the Starfish Thrower every little action we take matters to someone and the personal learnings will help us navigate our new normal.
