The importance of roots and wings for all on International Women's Day

It’s so important to remember the importance of culture in creating inclusive workplaces. If we are to succeed in changing the status quo, we must challenge male leaders to stand with women and ensure they have every opportunity to succeed.Over the years, there have been many people – men and women – who have shaped my career. On the eve of International Women’s Day, I wanted to recognise a particularly special and significant person who played a huge part in making me the business person I am today.Just as my mum gave me roots and wings as a child, Steve Kaufman, ex. CEO of the Arrow Group where I spent 12 years, and now a Harvard professor, let me spread my wings in the world of business by playing to my strengths, having 100% belief in me and teaching me about patience and the physiology of delay. So, as we look forward to tomorrow, let’s change how we celebrate this day, with a renewed commitment to how we will each Be Equal. This is the moment to pay forward the support, guidance and opportunities we have been afforded by those that have shaped our careers, to promote the advancement of gender equality in business leadership.Steve always made me feel like I belonged, and I think that is hugely important. So, my pledge for IWD 2019 is to always ensure others feel that same sense of belonging – that they are accepted, are an integral part of the team and can bring their whole and authentic selves to work without fear of different treatment or punishment.
